Mamdani has vowed to increase levies for the city's top earners and corporations. Navigating External Dynamics The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts. Mamdani has sought to address these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief. On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money.
